Quick & Salty 101: Sailing Basics

Quick and Salty 101 is the first step into real sailing. This class is designed for people who want practical skills and confidence on the water without getting buried in unnecessary theory. You will learn by doing, and you will understand how to control a sailboat with intention and awareness.

This course takes place on Stumptown Viking, our classic Ericson 23 MKII training boat with a responsive tiller. She is the perfect learning platform because you can feel the boat react to every adjustment in helm and sail trim. You will not just ride along. You will sail.

Cost

$199 per student

What to expect

This is a 7 hour training day divided into two parts:

Morning session: Dockside learning from 9:00am - 12:00pm
We will use the boat as a floating classroom and cover essential sailing theory in a straightforward, down to earth way. You will learn boat parts, how sails work with the wind, commands and communication, and how to work as a team on a small keelboat.

Afternoon session: On the water training from 12:00pm to 4:00pm
We head onto the Columbia River where each student will rotate through helm time and crew roles. You will steer with a tiller, trim sails, change direction using controlled maneuvers, and learn how to read wind and water.
