Our Story
SkyWind Sailing was founded to make sailing fun, accessible, and affordable on the Columbia River. We saw a need for classes that focus on the essentials, without the high costs or long commitments of traditional certification programs. Instead of requiring students to follow a rigid curriculum, we break traditional sailing school lessons into smaller, more approachable parts.
Captain Skylar first discovered sailing on a 60-foot boat out of Berkeley Marina through an “Intro to Sailing” ride. The rush of heeling and moving under wind power was unforgettable. For anyone curious about sailing but without access to a boat or a way to get started, SkyWind offers the chance to step aboard and experience it for yourself.

Where We Sail
Most of our sailing takes place on the Columbia River between the I-205 Bridge and the I-5 Bridge, right in the stretch between Vancouver, Washington and Hayden Island in Portland, Oregon. This area is one of the best places to learn and play on the water, with steady breezes funneled in from the Columbia River Gorge. The Gorge is famous for producing some of the best wind in the Pacific Northwest, which means you’ll experience exciting, reliable conditions while still enjoying the beauty of the river and skyline around you.
Our Crew
At SkyWind Sailing, the crew is small but mighty. Skylar is the owner and captain, keeping the sails trimmed and the lessons lively. James is the trusty first mate, always ready to lend a hand on deck. And then there’s Scuttle, our corgi and official Treat Officer, who makes sure every adventure comes with plenty of tail wags and snack breaks. Read more here...
